When Does “The Decade” End?
What’s with all the talk of “the decade” ending in a few weeks? Check out the web, radio, tv, or newspaper and you won’t have to look far to find a “Best of the Decade” article. “The Decade’s Greatest Movies” or “Best Album of the Decade”. Last time I checked, a decade is a period of ten years. So if my math is correct, 1985 – 1994 would be a decade…as would 1999 – 2008. You could also argue that October 21, 1916 – October 21, 1925 would be considered a decade, so it doesn’t even have to be December 31st!? I’ve even heard arguments on the radio about how some believe “the decade” ends at the close of 2009, while some believe the end is not until 2010. WHO CARES?!
Let’s face it. It’s just an easy article to write. Instead of actually generating new content you can just sit down and regurgitate random facts with numbers or bullets out to the side. Or perhaps, like me, you can write an article about how it doesn’t matter when the decade begins or ends as long as it’s a period of ten years.
Whether you see it my way or not…I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Decade!
